Pyruvate formate lyase (pfl, EC 2.3.1.54) is a bacterial enzyme that converts pyruvate into formate and acetyl-CoA. Because it is the rate-limiting step of microbial formate production, the pfl gene is used as a marker of a microbiome’s formate-producing capacity.
