MRTF-A (myocardin-related transcription factor A) is a transcriptional co-activator that is normally held inactive in the cytoplasm by binding to monomeric G-actin. Actin polymerization — for example, downstream of RhoA GTPase activation — depletes the pool of G-actin, releasing MRTF-A so that it can translocate to the nucleus and co-activate SRF-dependent gene transcription.
